How To Make Your Bedroom Mattress Last Longer

How To Make Your Bedroom Mattress Last Longer
Buying a new mattress can set you back several hundred dollars so you want to do everything you can to keep your bedroom mattress in the best possible condition for as long as you can. Here are some simple tips that can help you extend the life span and usefulness of your bedroom mattress.

Use A Mattress Protector
One of the simplest and most effective things you can do to help your bedroom mattress last longer is to use a good mattress protector. Putting a good quality mattress protector on your mattress immediately upon it’s arrival will help to form a barrier that keeps stains and spills from your mattress. It also reduces the amount of air borne dust, allergens and other contaminants that can get into your mattress.

Wash Your Linens Regularly
Many people don’t realize that having clean linens on your bed can actually help you keep your mattress in good condition for much longer. Even when using a mattress protector, dead skin cells, allergens and dust as well as skin and hair oils can eventually make their way into your mattress. By regularly cleaning your bedding, you are reducing the amount of contaminants that can penetrate your mattress and cause it to become dirty and smelly.

Keep Your Pets Out of Your Bed
We all love our pets and it is only natural that they should want to cuddle up next to us when we are sleeping. However, pet hair and dander from your beds can work it’s way into your mattress shortening it’s life span and causing your to breathe in these unwanted contaminants. You also eliminate the chance of certain pet odors making their way into your mattress.

Rotate Your Mattress Regularly
Over time Mattresses tend to adjust to the contours of your body, leaving hollow spots and lumps, which can quickly age your mattress and disturb your sleep. By rotating your mattress 180 degrees every 6 months or so from head to toe and if your mattress is double sided, then flip it completely over at least 1~2 times a year, you can help your mattress retain it’s original shape and comfort for much longer, and sometimes extending your mattress‘ life for several years more and beyond.

Vacuum Your Mattress Often
When you remove your bedding for washing (which should be at least once a week) remove and wash your mattress protector as well. Then take advantage of that stripped mattress to give your mattress a good going over with a vacuum, at least 1~2 times per month. This will help to remove any dust that has made it’s way through the mattress protector and onto and into the mattress itself.

Air Out Your Mattress A Couple of times a year
Airing out your mattress a couple of times a year will also help to keep it smelling fresher longer. Start by stripping your bed and then if possible stand your mattress up on it’s side so you can get airflow to both sides of your mattress.

By following these few simple tips you can extend the life of your mattress for a couple of years or more while still allowing you to get a good night’s sleep.
